Issue when using @ symbol in <pre>

I am trying to update my readme file and wanted to put an example of code inside a table. I used a <pre> tag to create the code block and wrote the following:

this is surrounded by <td></td>

For some reason when I preview this on git hub it looks like this:

I've tried using \ and ` to escape the @ sign but I am not sure why this is happening, what is @ eropple

This doesn't seem to work, as you can see the closing </td> isn't being recognized correctly
